Organic

Amazing Grass Organic Wheat Grass Powder, 8.5-Ounce Canister Wheat grass is an important part of my diet. But, I’ll be honest… I sometimes just cannot stomach the fresh kind (the smell alone can make my stomach turn). So, I keep a supply of Amazing Grass’ powdered wheat grass in my freezer all the time. It’s easy to mix and much easier for me to tolerate than the fresh stuff. Don’t get me wrong though, I still go hardcore and drink the fresh stuff from time to time – haha – but for the most part I drink the powdered version of Amazing Grass, which is very impressive! Here’s a fun and uber healthy recipe you can use… Read More »

RAW Protein – Garden of Life – I like rotating this protein powder into our raw vegan protein shake cycles because it contains a notable blend of proteins that I don’t get in my diet in general (at least not on a regular basis). For instance, it has: (all organic) sprouted brown rice protein, amaranth sprout, quinoa sprout, millet sprout, buckwheat sprout, garbanzo bean sprout, kidney bean sprout, lentil sprout, adzuki bean sprout, flax seed sprout, sunflower seed sprout, pumpkin seed sprout, Read More »

Maca Powder – Organic Raw Superfood, 16-Ounce – It’s true, I’m not the hugest fan of maca (it kind of smells like feet to me – haha) but this is one of the most popular superfoods among Raw vegans. It’s noted for giving you tons of energy and increased stamina for exercise, long days, and your libido! Here’s a recipe where I actually couldn’t taste it very much, so quite enjoyable… Read More »

Organic Raw Vegan White Cacao Butter – 1 Pound – Talk about decadent! This organic raw cacao butter is the stuff that dreams are made of. If you want to make the most impressive and delicious raw vegan cheesecakes, chocolates, and desserts, then you have to buy this. And, don’t stop at making food that you eat using your mouth with this wonderful product… your skin can eat it, too – this makes a wonderful, all natural moisturizer! Gently make it a liquid using a dehydrator or a double boiler and rub onto your body after your next shower.

Organic Raw Vegan Cacao Chocolate Nibs – 1 Pound – Throw in your DVD of Apocalypto, dress up like a Mayan Princess, and grind your own chocolate in the original fashion using a stone mortar. (Ok, truth be told, I do it in 1/1000 the time with a coffee bean grinder wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but it’s fun to pretend!) These are perfect for adding texture and crunch to your Raw vegan smoothies, nut milks, ice creams and so much more. For fantastically delicious and healthy Raw vegan chocolate, check out my book (also available in ebook format), Kristen Suzanne’s Ultimate Raw Vegan Chocolate Recipes.

Organic Raw Vegan Chocolate Powder – 16 Ozs. – This stuff is a-freakin’-mazing. The best Raw chocolate powder for all of your chocolate needs. It will change your life. There should be a bag of this in everyone’s household. Check out my blog, Kristen’s Raw Blog, for a great recipe (with video) using this ingredient: Cherry Chocolate Bomb Shake.

Books & DVDs

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox DVD – For those of you who love Dr. Bronner’s soap (pretty much all of us, right!?), then this is a fun treat of a dvd that my family enjoyed. It’s unique, fun, inspiring, interesting, and touching. If you know someone who uses Dr. Bronner’s soap all the time, then this also makes a great gift. Throughout the DVD, you’ll get to check out the history of the company, enjoy the quirkiness of the founder, and learn the meaning behind all of those words on the label.

Ricki Lake’s The Business of Being Born (DVD) is amazing. Watch this with your birthing partner. Lend it to your family to watch. It’s quite eye-opening and can help get the dialogue going. This DVD covers so many interesting and important statistics and thought-provoking ideas, plus powerful images. I’m so glad I saw this before we started our journey of conscious conception. Evie’s Kitchen is a delightful book written by Shazzie (a UK sassy super star!). I have many pages in this book tabbed for future reference when my baby is here. This book contains recipes as well as her wisdom about natural birthing, breastfeeding, attachment parenting, co-sleeping, natural immunity and first-aid, and more. It’s FILLED with fun and playful pictures.

Food, Inc. is an amazing, eye-opening, jaw-dropping documentary that should be in every home library. I was fortunate enough to see this opening weekend when we were in NY and heard the director speak after the viewing. Throughout the documentary, I was moved to tears a couple of times. I was riled up. My blood boiled in parts. I was humbled. I was motivated. And, I was inspired. Food, Inc. is a MUST-SEE. I’ve heard a couple people say, “Oh, it’s stuff I already know and has already been shown.” It doesn’t matter. Food, Inc. is to be praised. Read More »

If you haven’t seen it, YOU MUST!!! It’s beautiful, educational, fun, scary, eco-adventure-like and everyone needs to see this. Get educated about sharks like never before. Here is proof of the amazing info you’ll learn: My husband wanted me to learn how to scuba dive and I used to be terrified…because of sharks. Not anymore! This movie makes me want to hug a shark (if only that were possible – ahhh, I can dream). Seriously though, sharks are incredible creatures NEEDING OUR HELP! This terrific documentary has already won 31 international awards!!! Check out the details about Sharkwater here and then buy it here or rent it from Netflix – whichever you want, just do it! It’s amazing! We bought it and lend it out to family and friends to keep sharing the information, not to mention we like watching it a couple of times a year.

I am inspired. I am motivated. I am feeling high after watching this documentary, even though it’s the fifth time I’ve seen it. When the publishers of Food Matters sent me a copy for review, I was elated because it had been on my to-do list for a long time. And, man, am I glad I saw it! I showed it to both my mom and husband and we all wholeheartedly agreed that this is a documentary we want to see a few times a year. It’s that good! Read More »

Baby

I did a comprehensive review on baby carriers here (with videos!). I’d have to say that my overall winner is the Beco Gemini. It fits and feels so great, and Kamea loves it the most.

For those of you in the UK, here is a great place to get cloth nappies (I’m partial to their SmartiPants that they sent me to try). They have a great website with all kinds of accessories and goodies. Check them out: Fill Your Pants

Kids & Toys

As a green mommy I buy organic and eco-friendly toys for Kamea, to which there are quite a few options! Here is one of our favorites – Under The Nile Organic Fruit Basket. It is so super adorable, perfect for her little hands, made of bright colors, and I know she’s going to love it for years to come. I was hesitant to buy it at first because of the price (to be honest), but I finally decided to take the plunge and I’m so glad I did! It’s so stinkin’ cute!!!

I received Wildcraft! – An Herbal Adventure Game as a gift for the holidays. I haven’t played it yet, but I did read through the directions. It seems absolutely darling! It’s for pretty much all ages and offers the opportunity to learn about medicinal and edible plants while having fun at the same time. I love the illustrations and that it’s nature based – that’s my kind of game!

Food

The FoodSaver is truly one of the best additions to my vegan kitchen ever. With a FoodSaver I can add shelf life to my foods, saving me time, and helping to reduce waste. One of my favorite things to freeze is peeled bananas. Using a food saver ensures that they freeze without freezer burn! After you buy your FoodSaver, hop over to FoodSaver’s website and buy the “mason jar attachment” so you can use it with your glass mason jars.

Using glass mason jars is a GREAT way to make your life a little more green. Glass is better for the environment and for your health (no toxic BPAs there!). I use glass mason jars of all sizes to grow sprouts, drink smoothies and water, store sauces, sauerkraut, dressings, and to keep all of the goodies I buy in bulk such as hemp seeds, chia seeds, nuts, dried fruits, grains, and so much more (as you can see from the picture, this is a glimpse into one of my freezers). You can even use glass mason jars with the Food Saver machine to keep your foods extra fresh (you need the mason jar attachment from Food Saver for this).

When I’m using my tiffins I make sure to bring my own bamboo flatware, too. And, these are so adorable with their little carrying case made from recycled plastic bottles. Not to mention bamboo is a sustainable material. These scream eco-friendly all around. I love giving these to people as gifts and stocking stuffers. They’re just too cute (and the carrying cases are available in different colors. My husband has the black and I have the orange)!

To make my tiffins extra chic, I found these awesome “3- tier” tiffin carrying bags so they’re easy to transport. I love showing off my tiffin in a tiffin carrying bag. The carrying bag is woven from recycled materials and made with Fair Trade Principles. Cool, huh? Note: These tiffin carrying bags are made by the company “To-Go Ware” (the links here take you to Amazon to purchase), and they make two sizes of tiffins and two sizes of carrying bags. Be sure you get the “3-tier tiffin with the 3-tier tiffin carrying bag” or get the “2-tier tiffin with the 2-tier tiffin carrying bag.”

I love tiffins! These travel containers are great for toting my food around. Sometimes I pack a vibrant kale salad in one tier and another tier with goji berries and nuts. Sometimes I toss a protein bar in one tier while another tier is filled with carrot and celery sticks. Other times I pack organic quinoa in one tier with another tier carrying a raw vegan dessert. I’m definitely NOT a plastic girl so you won’t see me using that stuff. And, while I love glass, I’d rather get my workouts at the gym and not from lifting my lunch bag. These tiffins are awesome. Pictured here is the 2-tier tiffin. You can also buy a 3-tier tiffin here. Read More »

Chia Seeds – The Chia Seed is an amazing food. I use them in my shakes frequently because they’re so nutritious and they make my shakes and smoothies deliciously thick and filling. Chia seeds rock the house. Read my post at Kristen’s Raw about chia here, the“Dieter’s Dream Food.” Chia seeds are being praised for many things including their fantastic nutrient profile, which proudly boasts iron, boron, essential fatty acids, fiber, and more. Add to that the claims that they Read More »

Kitchen

I love using bamboo products in my kitchen and this 5-Piece Bamboo Utensil Set is on my kitchen countertop. There’s something so lovely about the energy I get from using bamboo products like this while I’m making healthy vegan food for my family. It’s so pretty, too! And, most importantly, bamboo is an eco-friendly choice. It’s a renewable resource. The product features boast that these will not swell, split, or absorb moisture.

I don’t know what I’d do without these beauties – they’re awesome. They come three in a package, and while I’ve only used two of them, I use them a LOT! The medium size is for scooping out avocado flawlessly and the small size I use for young Thai coconut. I always buy them as stocking stuffers during the holidays. Everyone loves them! Here are some videos where I demonstrate how to use the medium and small size. Read More »

Excalibur Dehydrator – Dehydrating your Raw food is a great addition to your Raw lifestyle because it adds tremendous variety to your diet as well as shelf life to some of your food. Now you can have crunchy foods, warm foods, marinated foods with a texture reminiscent of cooked food, and foods that can last a long time in your refrigerator or freezer. Learn everything you need to about using this magnificent piece of kitchen equipment, along with some of the best dehydrating recipes ever, with my book (ebook also available), EASY Raw Food Dehydrating.

Miracle 5 Liter Harsch Fermenting Crock Pot – Having Raw, Organic, Unpasteurized sauerkraut (and other fermented veggies) is a staple in my family’s diet. The benefits are numerous (friendly bacteria, vitamins, minerals, enzymes)! The problem is that it can get pretty expensive when buying this from the store on a regular basis. That’s why I invested in this awesome fermenting pot (I actually have the 7.5 liter). Now, I can make my own homemade (Raw, Organic, and Unpasteurized) sauerkraut and fermented vegetables for much cheaper. And, it’s FUN and totally bad-ass! Check out my video demonstrating it here.

Beauty Products

Bamboo Wash Cloths – I like using a wash cloth on my face when I’m cleansing it. It helps to gently exfoliate as well, as get all of the cleanser and makeup off my face. I only like super soft, eco-friendly wash cloths though. That’s why I love these Bamboo Wash Cloths! They’re made from both bamboo and organic cotton. I love giving these away as gifts, too.

Zosimos Botanicals – When it comes to makeup, I want the healthiest possible. Zosimos Botanicals is one of my favorites. I use their loose powder mineral foundation. And, what’s more… they’re an environmentally conscious company. They handcraft their own line of mineral makeup and natural skincare in a 100% wind-powered workshop. Cool!

Morrocco Method Int’l Hair Products – This has become my favorite line for hair care. I’ve been using Morrocco Method’s products on my hair for almost a year. The awesome thing about their products is that they’re organic, vegan, gluten-free, and even Raw! They are pure, baby, and I love them! Read More »

Dr. Alkaitis has become my ultimate favorite for skin care. There is a lot of truth that a healthy, raw, organic, plant-based diet will help give your skin the glow, but it’s not fool proof all of the time. We also have to take into account what we put on our skin. One of the general philosophies I follow is that if I can’t eat it, I probably don’t want it touching my skin either. Enter: Dr. Alkaitis products. Holy moly! These are amazing. Read More »

I love candles, but I love my salt lamps even more. I wrote about having a salt lamp as one of my postpartum must haves, and I also wrote about it in my birth story. As a cosleeping family, it’s been wonderful to have this on our nightstand. It gives the perfect amount of glow so that I can check on baby while sleeping, without keeping anyone awake. I buy our salt lamps here. They make wonderful gifts, too! I bought one for my mom, and she loved it so much she bought two more.

Eco-friendly toilet paper is the toilet-paper of choice for us. Enter: Seventh Generation. Let me just start by saying that when I buy toilet paper, I like to stock up! I mean, really, who wants to EVER run out of toilet paper? Frankly, it’s too easy to do that when you buy the small packages at the store. Not to mention, it’s usually a much better deal to buy in bulk like this. So, yes, this is a 48-pack and there are only two of us in the house right now. Seventh Generation toilet paper is made of 100% recycled paper (minimum 80% post consumer) and it’s free of dyes, inks, and fragrances. That being said, there is an interesting discussion of how recycled TP can have BPA in it. Read More »

Multi-Pure Undercounter Water Filter – This is the absolute smartest, most cost-effective, environmentally sound way to drink and prep food with delicious, pure, toxin-free water. Bottled water is ecological insanity and tap water is suspect even in the best of cases because municipalities don’t test for many dangerous contaminants such as hormones or prescription drugs that get into the water supply via urine. And even if your city tests well against the standard toxins, anything can happen in the pipes between them and you. Read More »
