Cloth Diaper Class

by Kristen Suzanne

I wrote recently that my family plans on trying Elimination Communication for our baby, but there are times we’ll need some cloth diapers. Therefore, I attended a cloth diaper class where they went through all kinds of cloth diaper options. Holy moly! There are so many! It’s exciting, yet a little overwhelming. I realize in the long run that cloth diapers should be cheaper, but what if I buy the wrong ones? Hhmmm…. well, I have some thinking to do (I took notes in the class and I need to review them). I’ll report back here on Green Mommy Blog about our choices. We also learned about wipe options, diaper bags, diaper containers, ways to wash baby’s bum, etc.

From what I can tell so far, I suspect we’ll use a variety of them for different situations. I know for sure that we’ll only choose options with organic cotton, bamboo, or hemp options. No wool, since we’re vegan. With that in mind… I’d love to know what your favorites are, so please feel free to share in the comment section.

Well, I haven't tried the bum genius organic, but have been pleased with bum genius for the past two years. I also like fuzzi bunz sized, but not so much the one size. I am not sure if there is an organic option for them.
And you just have to get a couple different ones and see which work best, and then stock up on those :) Different diapers work differently for different babies, so there is no real best diaper, IMO, it just depends on your baby's body type. It can seem overwhelming, but once you get into a routine and find what works for you, it really is pretty easy!

My husband always says our baby is going to come out potty trained, I will have to tell him about this concept! As of right now, I plan on using cloth. I can't wait to hear your reviews, this will be SOOOO helpful (because you haven't been helpful enough already!!) ;) Thanks for the link to Mothering.com, verrrry awesome, I love it over there. According to Dr. Hale and some other reputable sites, my meds only give a tiny amount into the milk, if any. Thanks for all the tips!

    So glad you like Mothering!

We use a combination of BumGenius (AIO) with snaps. They are great for travel and come in organic cotton. I like that everything is in one piece, it snaps (so no velcro going bad over time) and adjusts with baby's growth. At home, we mostly use organic cotton prefolds with a snappi (holds it all together) and swaddlebees covers. Works like a charm!! That's what works best for us and I'm so excited about cloth diapering that I love to help other mom's too. Sometimes it just depends on baby's body type. Our little girl is very lean so those brands work best for us!

    Sounds great, Leslie!

Yes, there are so many options but it's fun to try and see what works! We like Bumgenius 3.0 but just the AIOs are OG cotton. I have been happy with their bamboo fitted diapers for night diapering. We are also trying out the best bottom diapers at Nicki's Diapers (very helpful people there!) and I have been very happy with them so far. They have hemp/OG cotton inserts too. I plan to add more of those to my stash. Good luck…it is overwhelming starting out but it becomes like second nature!

I used prefolds with snappis and Imse Vinse covers when my son was an infant. Once he could move I switched to Fuzzi Bunz which were great. Then we used Imse Vinse training pants. If you are going to use cloth diapers, cloth wipes are super easy too, since you wash them together and they are more gentle.

Vegan, homebirthing, co-sleeping, baby-wearing, ECing, cloth diapering attached mama of an 8 month old girl here. LOVE your blogs and thought I'd share my thoughts on diapers.

We loved Swaddlebees organic velour fitteds with an Imse Vime organic cover until she outgrew them. We switched to Swaddlebees organic AIO's for outings and Bum Genius bamboo fitteds with the Imse Vimse cover while we're around the house. From time to time we also use organic cotton prefolds, but I don't really love them. Before the baby was born the choices seemed overwhelming (even after you eliminate everything that's not organic or vegan). But shortly after the baby arrived we found what worked and it's been easy ever since. I highly recommend Charlie's Soap to wash the diapers and Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm as a diaper cream (all of their products are really awesome!).

We're also ECing and its been going very well. It's worth the effort!

This may sound a like a weird, unrelated, question but have you considered your placenta options after the birth? I had pills made and swear they helped with my postpartum moods.

Thanks for the inspiring and informative blogs! Best of luck with your birthing and parenting journeys.

Thx! Very helpful. Yes, I have placenta plans. ;)

Good timing! I just published the results of a survey on the topic that might help; I was a little scared how many different options there were and how many people had tried more than one before they found one that fit their needs!

i'm thinking of going to cloth diapers. my dd is on her way to potty training (sort of).. but i think it might be a good transition. can you suggest or post links to the ones you liked? and how did they say to clean them easiest?

  • http://GreenMommyBlog.com/ Kristen Suzanne

I'll have a blog post detailing some of this info soon. ;)

cosleeping rocks! we kept the crib by our bed until she was too heavy for the bassonet and then my dh didn't want her in our bed so we tried the crib but she wouldn't sleep well at all. so i said lets just let her sleep with us. he was fine. she slept the entire night without crying at all! it was really easy. everyone said you will never get her out of your bed. well around 1 she started rolling all over the place and seemed like she was comfortable and needed her own space. so we bought a futon like bed that is on the floor. the first night we put her in her bed she slept the entire night until 8 am! she didn't cry once. we had some awesome lullabys by kenny loggins.. yes kenny loggins but they rock! they take me away to a mystical place. she was sleeping in her own bed withher own comforter at 1.

on a side note we lay by her until she falls asleep each night. i believe in this and think it is one of the reasons for her easy transition, kind of a cosleeping transition. my dad use to do this and it is one of the most safe memories i have.

can you give me the link to the webpage you buy the diapers from? i want to start my daughter off on some. also how many do you think you need for 1 child. (my dd is 21 months old) and any suggestions on how to handle the transport of them if she goes to daycare?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/JS224RFV5QPADEQVD3VCIZH34E Leslie

Suzy, I actually buy them from a great natural parenting store locally (I live in Arkansas). The website is http://www.terra-tots.com. The owner is super nice and really helpful, and I'm pretty certain that they would send them to you if you wanted.

As for the number of diapers you would need, my estimate is about 7-10 per day. My daughter is 20 months old. However, the younger the baby, the more you'd need. I have 10 AIO (all in one) diapers, and about 20 prefolds with 5 covers and that will last me about 3 days before I need to do laundry.

My daughter does not go to day-care, but I hear it is easier for daycare providers to use AIO's because they are more like the paper diapers they are used to (no folding or covers). Also, to dispose of the diapers, you can provide a diaper dirty-bag, which is waterproof inside and can be thrown into the wash along with the diapers.

    Hope this helps!

I hear potty training is easier for kiddos in cloth because they feel wet much quicker than in paper diapers. My daughter is 20 months and is REALLY interested in potty training right now! (yay!)

    Great info!

    Hi Kristen:
I LOVE Fuzzibunz. they are so not natural or organic (although you can use hemp liners) my baby has extra sensitive skin and can't tolerate any wetness. fuzzibunz actually wiks the wetness away. I tried so many others with materials like “zorb” and others but really they all still ended up with wet material next to baby's bum. oh and I think velcro sucks, even if you buy those little tools to clean it up, velcro gets trashed over time and if it comes loose from the “laundry tabs” in the wash it will destroy the PUL on the rest of your diapers.
one other thing is that a lot of clothes don't fit over cloth diapers so the trimmest ones are the nicest. Motherease with covers are brutal for bulkiness. some people say to just size up but then clothes fit all funky. lots of organic clothing fit well though (they get it I guess)
just adding my 2 bits to the rest! I know it is overwhelming, I researched for days on end and still ended up with $100 of diapers that me and my husband hate. it is worth it in the end when you find the ones that work for you. it will still be a savings too.
    Good Luck!

I know you don't buy wool, but I don't know if you're opposed to recycled wool or not? I don't buy any new wool or leather products, but I will buy them if I find them in a thrift store, since I figure reusing is the ultimate in green, and if I can extend the life of something that already exists, I feel good about that. I made our son's diapers using thrift store fabric (t-shirts, sweatshirts, flannel sheets, etc) but they needed a waterproof cover over them. So I used this pattern to make covers out of old sweaters: http://www.borntolove.com/frugal-column2.html
The sweaters were wool, but they were way past their prime and I got them for almost nothing at a thrift store. I shrunk them, which makes them pretty waterproof, and then sewed covers to go over our son's diapers. They work great, and it felt great to get new life out of the old sweaters. Our son is almost two, and he's still wearing his homemade diapers and wool covers.

My son does use the bumgenius organics as well as several other brands. If you want all organic/natural then it will definitely keep the baby's bum wet and won't wick away anything to keep things dry. But I found that some people like that b/c supposedly the baby will potty train easier when they relate wetting themselves to discomfort. Perhaps that is the thing for you then with doing E/C. I sure look forward to hearing how E/C works out for you. Also you might try finding some fitteds that are organic or hemp or what not. Some people like to use these b/c they can always tell if it is wet. But it will get the baby's clothes wet if they are wearing any if you don't have a cover on them. And if you want a cover, we love Thirsties duo wraps. Well hope that helps you in your quest!
    All the best!

Thanks for posting this. This is excellent information (including comments). I am in the middle of adding cloth diapers to my baby registry and felt overwhelmed… until I read this. Thanks again.

    Yay. So happy it helped.

I love my gumgenius organic diapers. Because they are one size I can use the same diapers on my 15 month old and my newly 3 year old. Once the baby was out of the newborn size (about 3 months) they fit great. For newborn you go through sooooo many diapers I like to use prefolds and Green mountain Diapers make great ones and they offer oganic too. As for the whole potty training sooner because they feel wetness my 3 yo. apparently missed that memo and happily refuses to use the potty.

You might also want to try Wildflower Diapers (http://www.wildflowerdiapers.com/store/pc/home.asp), which is local to me in the Phoenix area, but they have a great selection also. They have a great FAQ page with some info on what to expect, what you need, etc.

  • alissab

It's hard to read back through everyone else's comments, but since you're local, have you been to Wildflower Diapers? It's nice to be able to see and try everything out before you “go live” with it. I personally went just with basic prefolds with covers… preferred velcro to snaps because it gave me a bit more fit control. We loved them until my son started walking and fighting diaper changes… at which point we switched to disposables (gasp!). :) Can't wait to potty train. Though I do love that cloth will be useful for my next child also!!!

Will Shell be doing your placenta? I just buried mine last time but am considering having her do something with it this time (due mid Oct). I would be interested in what you are planning.

Do you read Mothering magazine? I just got the latest issue and there is a great article about EC as well as an amazing in-depth article on cloth diapering. After seeing both those articles I knew I had to make sure you knew about it, and then I busted out laughing because I turned the page and saw an article on raw food! :D

  • http://GreenMommyBlog.com/ Kristen Suzanne

    I just got it! :) ))

  • Sara

The great thing about a growing baby? Every few months you get the opportunity to buy a new size! That said, I recommend you avoid the Bummis original wrap. I found that the way the velcro closures were placed, they scratched my little guy's thighs something awful! Check out ecstore.com for the simply cloth cover, and ecaPants (which look really good to me), and Babyworks.com has training pants (Nikkys) that another ec mom in my area recommended to me (I'm also ec'ing part time with my 6 week old son). Best of luck to you on the journey!
