Stretch Mark Prevention with Eco-Friendly Products

topics: Beauty
by Kristen Suzanne

I recently posted on my Kristen’s Raw blog about how I’m attempting to prevent stretch marks with eco-friendly, natural products. It’s important to me to only use products that are truly green, healthy, and safe for the environment, my body, and the growing life inside of me.

I’ve been using a number of products to help prevent them so while I’m trying some new products and getting variety… I can’t say for sure which are sure fire for helping – lol. I’m also not sure at what point stretch marks show up, if they do, but I don’t have any yet. I’ve had many people tell me that my healthy high-raw, all vegan diet is also probably helping. In the beginning of pregnancy, I stayed away from essential oils, but I’ve run these products by my midwife and did a little extra research which made me feel better about it. Plus, I’m not using any one of these products daily since I’m switching it up with plain, edible, purely natural products, so I feel safe in my plan. As always though, if you’re pregnant, you should consult your midwife or physician when selecting body care products to use while pregnant. Here are the things I’m using!

Hello Kristen! I love the blog and all the wonderful information you share! I’m curious what you use on your face (that’s safe & natural) while your pregnant? I’m 6 weeks pregnant and looking for a great face wash & oil free moisturizer (I’m prone to acne)… any suggestions???

Low levels of both zinc and iodine play a role in the development of stretch marks during pregnancy. Zinc has more of an impact than iodine, however. Pregnant women are typically zinc deficient and should supplement as zinc is highly beneficial for both mother and baby during pregnancy. While some light stretch marks might be inevitable; the deep, dark purple-blue colored stretch marks are also called fissures and can be prevented with an optimal diet, and adequate intake of zinc and iodine, but zinc especially.

Zinc is typically found in protein food sources, specifically meats and animal products. However, sea vegetables and other vegetarian sources do exist. Zinc can be found in sea vegetables, yeast, peanuts (though these other risks involved with aflatoxin), beans, whole grains, brown rice, whole wheat, potato, and the highest concentration of all is in pumpkin seeds! ;o) YUM! Pumpkin seeds are also fantastic at helping combat intestinal parasites. Sea vegetables are an overall FANTASTIC food, especially during pregnancy and nursing!

I knew you did! ;o) I just wanted to add this bit of information as to what actually causes stretch marks and that topical creams really don't to a lot for it (prevention or reduction) from all the research I have read.

Wow, interesting info. I would have never suspected zinc. I had perfect white belly skin until 34 weeks. All of a sudden I had those HUGE fissures you are describing. So sad to know I could have prevented it. They still haunt me, though faded. I'll probably cry just thinking about them again. :(

Kristen, good luck to you! Do let us know how these work! Hope they do!! With your stellar diet, I'm sure you'll have no stretch marks. I, by the way, have stretch marks on my abs just above my bikini line… and a few tiny ones near my belly button. They're no big deal (for me anyway).
