Zosimos Botanicals

by Kristen Suzanne

Zosimos Botanicals – When it comes to makeup, I want the healthiest possible. Zosimos Botanicals is one of my favorites. I use their loose powder mineral foundation. And, what’s more… they’re an environmentally conscious company. They handcraft their own line of mineral makeup and natural skincare in a 100% wind-powered workshop. Cool!

Harcsh Fermenting Crock Pot

by Kristen Suzanne

Miracle 5 Liter Harsch Fermenting Crock Pot – Having Raw, Organic, Unpasteurized sauerkraut (and other fermented veggies) is a staple in my family’s diet. The benefits are numerous (friendly bacteria, vitamins, minerals, enzymes)! The problem is that it can get pretty expensive when buying this from the store on a regular basis. That’s why I invested in this awesome fermenting pot (I actually have the 7.5 liter). Now, I can make my own homemade (Raw, Organic, and Unpasteurized) sauerkraut and fermented vegetables for much cheaper. And, it’s FUN and totally bad-ass! Check out my video demonstrating it here.

Hurom Juicer

by Kristen Suzanne

Hurom Juicer – YEAH BABY! This is my favorite juicer. It’s way easy (and fast) to use, quick to clean, and juices with a single auger, making it a slow juicer so the juice stays fresh longer. I know, oxymoron, right? Slow juicer that juices fast? But, it does! The size of the auger makes juice fast by moving a lot through it, but at a slow speed. My life wouldn’t be the same without fresh organic green juice (I like to call it Plant Blood - lol). For amazing juice recipes, check out my book (also available in ebook), Kristen Suzanne’s EASY Raw Smoothies, Juices, Elixirs & Drinks.

Multi-Pure Undercounter Water Filter

by Kristen Suzanne

Multi-Pure Undercounter Water Filter – This is the absolute smartest, most cost-effective, environmentally sound way to drink and prep food with delicious, pure, toxin-free water. Bottled water is ecological insanity and tap water is suspect even in the best of cases because municipalities don’t test for many dangerous contaminants such as hormones or prescription drugs that get into the water supply via urine. And even if your city tests well against the standard toxins, anything can happen in the pipes between them and you. Read More »

Blendtec Blender

by Kristen Suzanne

Blendtec Blender – One of the best high-powered blenders on the market. It’s great for making all kinds of Raw vegan recipes. One of my favorite aspects about Blendtec is the shape of the container. The four flat sides (and the two-pronged blade) make it easy to get the food out, simple to clean, and the whole unit fits neatly on my counter under my cupboard. Not only that, but they now also offer a big 3-quart jar with lid (additional purchase), which is awesome for making big batches of smoothies, soups, etc. High powered blenders like this, and the Vita-Mix 5200 (details above), make Raw food preparation FUN!

Vita-Mix 5200 Blender

by Kristen Suzanne

Vita-Mix 5200 Blender – I’m a fan of both Vita-Mix and Blendtec blenders, because they are both great. The Vita-Mix 5200 model comes with a container that is BPA-FREE (Hello! BPA-FREE!) with improved sound dampening so it’s not crazy loud, even though it comes with a powerful 2 peak HP motor. It also has a fantastic, easy to use lid and pour spout. This bad boy pulverises berries – skins, SEEDS, and all – that ROCKS, because those seeds are loaded with nutrition that would normally get passed right through your body! Read More »

MAC Knife

by Kristen Suzanne

MAC Knife – The number one tool you need in your kitchen is an excellent, sharp knife. You might as well make it FUN while you’re at it, eh? This is the one I love and use. It has a wonderful feel to it and the mega sharp blade rocks the house! And, while you’re at it, don’t forget to get a Knife Sharpener. It’s very important to keep your knife sharp because a dull knife can be just as, if not more(!), dangerous than a sharp knife. This is the one I use with my MAC knife.

Sun Warrior Sprouted Brown Rice Protein Powder

by Kristen Suzanne

Sun Warrior Protein Powder – Another protein powder regularly consumed in our household is sprouted, raw vegan, brown rice protein powder. For this we buy Sun Warrior’s brand. This has a high protein content, and according to Sun Warrior, their brown rice protein is actually complete (they told me: Most rice proteins in the past used white polished rice. We’ve taken organic whole grain brown rice with the bran and the endosperm layers which raise the amino acid profile to make a complete protein. It’s bio-fermented with natural enzymes (no heat), stripping down the carbohydrate and sugar content, leaving 85% bio-available protein.) Read More »

Hemp Protein Powder – Got Hemp?

by Kristen Suzanne

Hemp Protein Powder – This a big part of my diet, especially during my pregnancy. It’s an amazing source of plant-strong protein. I would have to say that my favorite protein powder for taste is plain ol’ Hemp Protein Powder. I like it because it doesn’t actually have much taste to it. Some say it has a likable “nutty” flavor. It’s a wonderful source of complete protein and fiber. If there was a downside of hemp protein powder, I’d say it’s the texture. It’s gritty, like sand. For this reason, I’m not a huge fan of just having it plain with water (which I do prefer with some other protein powders such as Sun Warrior’s Sprouted Brown Rice Protein). In general, the way I overcome the grit-factor Read More »

Hemp Seeds (a.k.a. Hemp Nuts, Hemp Hearts)

by Kristen Suzanne

Hemp Seeds – Hemp is commonly referred to as a “superfood” because of its amazing nutritional value. Its amino acid profile dominates with the 8 essential amino acids (10 if you’re elderly or a baby), making it a vegetarian source of “complete” protein! Organic Food & Products = Green Lifestyle!

topics: Green Eating
by Kristen Suzanne

Organic produce from our CSA

According to the Organic Trade Association, “Organic agricultural production benefits the environment by using earth-friendly agricultural methods and practices. Here are some facts that show why organic farming is “the way to grow.”

Choosing organically grown foods is one of the most important choices we can make. According to Environmental Working Group, “The growing consensus among scientists is that small doses of some pesticides and other chemicals can cause lasting damage to human health, especially during fetal development and early childhood.”

I use organic produce and products for pretty much everything when it comes to my food. There are very few exceptions, and that would be if the recipe called for something I just can’t get organic such as jicama, certain seasonings, or any random ingredient that my local health food store is not able to procure from an organic grower for whatever reason.

If you think organic foods are too expensive, then start in baby steps and buy a few things at a time. Read More »

Seriously, if you want to know the meticulously scientific, scary truth about meat’s causal linkage to cancer, heart disease, and numerous other killers, this is the most important book to read on this list. The chapters on how doctors, hospitals, FDA and the meat/dairy industries have responded to this will get your blood boiling.

Go Vegan & You’re Going Green – Booyah!

topics: Green Eating
by Kristen Suzanne

There are three main reasons that people live a vegan lifestyle: Animal Rights - Health - Environment. Some people focus on one and some focus on all three. Personally, my primary reason for going vegan was for animal rights. I had always been interested in healthy living, so that was a major bonus. But when I learned about the ways it helps the environment, I was blown away.

For the purposes of this blog, I’m going to break it down for you Green Style, and write about how going vegan helps the environment. Read More »

Citizen Lobbying For Animal Rights – YEAH BABY!

topics: Animals
by Kristen Suzanne

We went to the Capitol to lobby for animal rights in Phoenix, AZ this week. What a terrific educational experience – we learned so much! The group was organized by the Human Society of the United States, and they took the time to really help organize us, brief us on the bills, and help make us feel extra comfortable with the process (many newbies were in attendance). There were over 80 attendees, with 24 of Arizona’s 30 districts being represented! - all fighting for animal rights.

We were divided into our districts and had appointments set for us with our specific representatives in the house and senate. Our group, District 7, was pretty successful in our attempts (score!). Our goal was to get support for 2-3 bills per representative depending on how much time we had. Our first meeting was with Senator Ed Bunch and we discussed three bills with him (one of which was to end greyhound racing in Tucson – did you know the track doesn’t pay taxes, yet this cruel and inhumane activity costs the state upwards of $250,000 a year!? And, in this horrible economy, that’s beyond ridiculous). Read More »

Review: Morrocco Method International Hair Products

topics: Reviews
by Kristen Suzanne

I wrote a blog post over at my Kristen’s Raw blog about Morrocco Method International Hair Products. You can read my original review here. Be sure to read the comments, too, because Anthony Morrocco chimes a couple of times to answer readers’ questions. Gotta love that!

I’m a paying customer of theirs, but they sent me a review package including some of their groovy elixirs to use on my scalp and hair. I love them. My husband and I have marveled at the rate of my hair growth. Some say that the pregnancy is contributing to that, but I’ve been using Morrocco Method products for some time now, well before I became pregnant. They also sent me their Agave Mist Styling Spritz to try. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the spray bottle… the sprayer thing itself shoots out a spray that is not “mist like” which makes it a little hard to use (it sprays kind of in a thick-ish stream, at least mine does, so what I do is spray it in my hands and then scrunch my hair or run it through with my hands). I’ve bought and tried their Feng Shea Facial Scrub which is a nice exfoliator. Read More »

Review: Vita-Mix 5200 Blender vs Blendtec Blender

topics: Reviews
by Kristen Suzanne

Here is a blog post I wrote on Kristen’s Raw featuring my thoughts about Vita-Mix 5200 vs Blendtec.

—————

There are actually two reviews. My first one was a comparison review for the new Vita-Mix 5200 versus the Blendtec that I’d had for quite a few years (and adored). Even though I loved my Blendtec for a long time, at the time of the review, I was impressed with Vita-mix’s BPA-free container as well as their warranty. I’ll say this… When it comes down to it, both blenders are phenomenal. They’re both high-powered and they both get the job done. Read More »
